"Do I Have to Do This?!"

Once in a while, one of my students complains about an assignment I give, “Mrs. Hess, do I have to do this?”

I always reply with a speech similar to this one:

“I don’t know what you’re going to do when you grow up. You may be the president of the United States, the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a scientist who cures cancer, an entrepreneur, or a philanthropist.

I. do. not. know. But, I do know that I’m going to teach you as much as I can so that I am not the reason that you do not succeed.

So, it’s your choice to decide whether to complete the assignment or not.”

Every single time, the student simply looks at me without commenting, then he silently lowers his eyes to the page and starts the assignment.

In my mind, I’m always thinking:

I don’t know; but God does!

13 For you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you, for I am wondrously made. Wonderful are your works! You know me right well;

Psalms 139:13-14
